Recognizing that students need encouragement and support as they make the challenging transition from childhood to adolescence, we focus on the teacher-student relationship in middle school. Each student is assigned to an advisor who gets to know the student as an individual. Teachers meet weekly to give updates on student progress, discuss problems and challenges, probe opportunities for interdisciplinary connections and explore current educational theory to better serve our youth.
Advisory groups meet each day, creating an atmosphere that fosters interpersonal relationships and develops self-esteem. This is a time for reflection, learning organizational skills, exploring social interactions and creating a space for prayer.
During a typical day, students move from classroom to classroom for both core subjects and enrichment classes. We use multiple groupings to provide diversity of students within each class. The length and frequency of class depends on subject area, laboratory work and amount of in-depth study. Students move about in an environment where love of learning is a key ingredient to our strong academic program. Our high expectations and individualized learning plans challenge students and help them know they can succeed.
