Weekly Newsletter 01/14/2021:
It has been another busy and exciting week in Kindergarten!
Next week we will have the entire lower campus back. Hooray! I thought I would send a friendly reminder of carpool procedures to help keep us moving through quickly.
1. Pull up as close to the curb as possible.
2. Stay in your car and let the teachers load the kiddos.
3. Pull into the designated buckling location to keep the line moving.
4. Teachers love to touch base and share stories about your children, but please refrain from doing this in the carpool line as it keeps others waiting.
5. Please refrain from parking in the lot and walking to pick up. Often the spot for buckling is taken and the disruption of the line from cars needing to back out slows things down considerably. It is also a safety issue for our insurance.
We appreciate your attention to these guidelines so we can move everyone through quickly and most importantly SAFELY!
Toys from Around the World: The children are excited about the new project called Toys from Around the World. Look for more information in your child's folder. Please make sure your child takes an active role in choosing the toy you help them bring to school. They will need to tell all they know about the toy, and know what country and continent the toy is from. The toy can be made in a different country other than the USA or invented in another country. Look around your home for classic toys and games and find out where they were invented. I showed the children legos along with my completed sheet. I am expecting the children to do all the writing. If not, I will ask them to redo this portion of the project. This is an interesting and fun project for the children and I can't wait to see what they bring in starting next week. The last day to bring in a toy is on January 29th. We are also enjoying Our World Map and learning about the continents.
Some children have already brought their toy and information to share. They are doing a great job sharing their information and asking interesting questions. Our toys came from Mexico and Norway.
We have been having fun singing our continents song! Ask your child to share it with you!
Winter Ice Light Catchers
This is such a fun project to do during the cold months! Gather the kids and bundle them up to head outside to find natural objects to freeze in ice. Looking forward to making something special for our furry and feathered friends. More information is in your child's folder.
Thank you to those who have sent in their nature collection. If you have not done so, spend some time outdoors this weekend and collect nature that your child thinks will be beautiful in their light catchers. We will be making the Light Catchers next Wednesday. Don't forget the pie tin with your child's name!
Highlights: Literacy Cart, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. discussions, stories, art project, and writings, maps, toys from around the world, checkers, having the rest of the grades back at school, playing in the snow, making snowmen, math games
Snacks: please send fruits and veggies
Religion: Our religion lessons this week was learning about Dr. King. We read books and wrote about him. The children were very insightful in our conversation about what Dr. King wanted to do and how he wanted to change the world.
Our Promise magazine was: Baptism welcomes us into God's family.
Communications: We have been sound blending with letter "a". The words come and me were introduced.
We are writing daily. Children wrote stories about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. They have learned a lot about Dr. King! I am very impressed with their writing skills. It's so fun to see the children finger tapping to sound out words. The children are also remembering to write from the top down, using uppercase letters for the begining of sentences, and a period at the end of their sentences.
We are working on not having floating or sinking letters. Help your children to write inside of the lines and having proper letter placement.
We have been playing a sight word spelling game.
Please keep helping your child to make all letters and numbers starting from the top. The children are working hard at making the transitions from using upper case letters in their names.
High Frequency Words: I, like, you, the, a, and, see, we, a, to, no, go, come, me
Leveled Literacy Cart: Every Monday your child will pick out 5 books for the week that will come home in a special labeled Ziploc. They will return these books on Friday for a new check out on Monday.

Kindergarten Tip: We always start printing numbers and letters from the top. We also print our names the “kindergarten way,” which is the first letter is capitalized and the rest lower case. We are also make suer our letters are the right proportions and that we do not have any "floating" letters.Literature we read: Martin's Big Words, A Picture Book of Martin Luther King Jr., My Daddy, Dr. Marin Luther King Jr., I Have a Dream, Does a Kangaroo Have a Mother too?, Llama Llama Misses Mama, Crash! Here are some super important notes for kindergarten parents:
Dismissal Procedures: A big part of every day is going home. We have your transportation plans on file and in the classroom. It is so important to us and to your child that they know where they are going after school. Often there are changes, such as doctor appointments, piano lessons or play plans with friends. If you have a change in plans, other than what you indicated on forms, we MUST have an Email before 3:00, please copy Holly on to the Email.
Post the monthly kindergarten calendars your child brings home.
If your child has “ kindergarten tummy” (is missing you, which is normal, and often it happens more the 2nd and 3rd week of school) help your child by putting a photo of you in their backpack or pocket. They can take a peek whenever they want to.
Sometimes children have food allergies in the kindergarten class, as is becoming the norm in schools. If a class has a student with allergies, that class will follow allergy awareness procedures and will not bring any food or drink besides water into the classroom. An exception is on days we cannot eat in the cafeteria, safe procedures will be in place on these days as well. To help encourage good hygiene and prevent the spread of germs, the children will wash their hands before starting their day. This will help in reducing illnesses.
Kindergarteners have an afternoon snack: fresh fruit or vegetable (parents provide). You may want to chat with your child about saving that afternoon snack food in their lunchbox. We will supply snack the first week of school.
Birthday Celebrations: Out of concern for students’ overall wellness, Carondelet has decided to eliminate birthday treats from the school day. Instead, students will be given an out-of-uniform day on their birthday and will also be invited to lunch with the Principal during their birthday month. Teachers will also have their own classroom traditions. We celebrate summer birthdays during the last week of school with a classroom piñata. We love Birthdays!!
Communication/Newsletters: Parents must read the important details from the Classroom newsletters that are posted online each Friday (end-of-day, around 5:30). The All-school on-line newsletter is emailed to parents each Friday.
It's going to be a GREAT year!!
